The HERSTORY of Sigma
Gamma Rho dates from November 12th, 1922 at Butler University in Indianapolis,
Indiana. Itâs founders were seven remarkable and beautiful black
school teachers. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority was the first black sorority
founded on a non-black campus.
The founders sought
to create an organization which offered teachers an opportunity for fellowship
and professional growth. They dreamed of a legacy, which promoted
the ideas of greater service and achievement through higher education.
It's purpose is expressed in its slogan "Greater Service, Greater Progress".

The Gamma Kappa Chapter
was founded on July 11th, 1964 at California State University, Long Beach
becoming the first Black Greek Letter organization on Long Beach State's
campus.
As a chapter and
a sorority, our slogan is "Greater Service, Greater Progress", indicating
that service to the community is the organization's highest priority.

Responsibility, stability,
discipline, purpose and self-respect set the level of scholastic expectancy
for the chapter members and prospects. Collective striving for these qualities

Sorority, Inc.
