Omega Psi Phi Fraternity was founded on November 17, 1911 on the campus of Howard University.  Three Howard undergraduate students, with the assistance of their faculty adviser initiated the first men's Greek letter fraternity on a Black College campus.

The name Omega Psi Phi was derived from the initials of the Greek phrase meaning "friendship is essential to the soul," The phrase was selected as the motto. Manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift were adopted as cardinal principles.

Since it's founding, Omega's purpose has been to bring about a union of college men of similar high ideals of scholarship and manhood, to occupy a progressive helpful and constructive place in the political life of the community and to aid the downtrodden in its efforts to achieve higher economic and intellectual status.

Omega Psi Phi's national programs such as:

  • The South African Initiative
  • Omega UNCF Initiative
  • The National High School Essay Contest
reflect their continued commitment to it's principles.  The fraternity's involvement in the National Assault on Illiteracy Program is another example of its enduring commitment to the principle of Uplift.

Chi Beta Chapter was chartered at California State University, Long Beach on January 14, 1992.  Since the day of its chartering the members of Chi Beta have been deeply involved in the support of African American students at CSULB.
