CSULB|NPHC |
The
Black Greek Letter Council (BGLC) was founded in 1981 by a group of visionary
African American students who had a desire to unite the historically Black
fraternities and sororities on the Long Beach campus.
Its members have a long history of providing leadership and service across the campus. On October 25, 1997 after 16 years as the BGLC, the California State University, Long Beach chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council was chartered. This historic event aligned Black Greeks at CSULB with Black Greek Letter Organizations across the country. The CSULB-NPHC officially embraced the philosophy, goals and mission of the national organization. The CSULB Pan-Hellenic Council has eight chartered NPHC fraternities and sororities. The Long Beach State chapter is actively involved in the campus and surrounding communities. Each year the council programs contribute to the educational and cultural enrichment of Long Beach students. The CSULB-NPHC has always had its place in the forefront of leadership and service for African American students. The NPHC and the affiliate fraternities and sororities are involved in voter registration drives, programs of recruitment and retention of underrepresented students, programs to eliminate illiteracy, mentoring and tutorial programs, scholarship giveaways, health awareness workshops and community services. The CSULB-NPHC has established a reputation in the western United States for it leadership and programming. A number of CSULB-NPHC fraternity and sorority members have held national offices in the respective organizations. The
